Initiation to Northern Research and Issues | Advance Notice of the Call for Applications

This year marks the return of the “Initiation to Northern Research and Issues” training, aimed at graduate students.

As in previous editions, the 2025 organizing committee plans to bring together a diverse student community in November for three days of training featuring a variety of content and formats. The training location is currently being determined.

More details will follow over the summer when registration opens, but here are a few of the topics already planned:

  • Issues, challenges, and benefits of conducting research in Northern contexts
  • Knowledge mobilization and sharing within Northern communities; weaving of knowledges
  • Introductory activities on Indigenous cultures
  • Methodologies and protocols of Northern research
  • Moments of sharing and networking we hope will be unforgettable

Please note that this training is non-credit, but you may be able to request an equivalency from your academic program. Participants will be selected based on their application.

When registration opens, the following documents will be required to submit an application:

  • A short 2-page CV
  • A letter of motivation
  • A 250-word summary of your research project in or related to a Northern context
  • Written approval from your research supervisor to attend the training

It may also be possible for a student to participate even if they are not enrolled in a graduate program, as long as they are conducting research as part of their academic training. These cases will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the evaluation committee.
