My Northern Project | Call for applications

Many people have been waiting for the call for applications for the My Northern Project science popularization competition!

This competition is aimed at Quebec students conducting northern and Arctic research. The concept is simple, you have five minutes, on-the-dot, to present your research project in the most captivating and informative way possible.

In addition to being an excellent communication exercise, this contest could take you far! In fact, by participating, you could be selected to represent Quebec at the international finals held each year during the Arctic Circle Assembly in Iceland.

That said, before the international final, you will have to take part in the provincial round, which will be held in front of an audience during INQ's Northern Days.

So, do you dare to take up the challenge?

June 5-6 | INQ’s Northern Days

Institut nordique du Québec and its partners are pleased to invite you to Northern Days 2023.

Under the theme "Imprints of a Green Economy in a Northern Context", this conference will be a unique opportunity to discuss, present the state of knowledge and explore different perspectives by bringing together key actors from northern communities, First Peoples, academia, governments, NGOs and the private sector.

Northern Days will be moderated by Alexandre Bacon, a specialist in Indigenous issues. Professor Pierre-Olivier Pineau will open the event with a presentation entitled: Green Economy and Energy Development: Quebec and Northern Issues.

The Arctic under the gaze of satellites

In 2008, space agencies made their satellite data freely available and remote sensing entered a new era.

For Alexandre Roy, professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at UQTR and holder of the UQTR Research Chair in Northern Remote Sensing, this is a window to see the Arctic from the sky and to better understand how it is being transformed by climate change.

Northern Lexicon – Harbour Seal

Did you know that the harbour seal has remarkable diving abilities? It can remain under water for about thirty minutes and reach impressive depths. This marine mammal is also equipped with sensitive vibrissae, or whiskers, which allow it to detect fish in the water, even from several dozen meters away.

To find out more about this amazing animal, Marie-Christine Lafrenière, a doctoral candidate in biological sciences and artist, has prepared an infographic.

This information sheet is the second in a series of six on northern wildlife. Other sheets will be released in the coming weeks on the various INQ platforms, so stay tuned!

These infographics, which are intended for a young audience, are also accompanied by a drawing of the featured animal in its habitat that can be coloured.

The "Northern Lexicon" is a communication project for the general public aimed at broadening our general knowledge the North.

"Northern Lexicon" content featured at the festival...

Last June, as part of the Northern Lexicon, we unveiled video content developed by Rachel Guindon, a master's student in biology at Université Laval, entitled Toundra, définition vivante.

Rachel and Étienne Belles-Isles, an independent filmmaker and graduate of Université Laval in Natural and Managed Environments, produced a longer version of this video that was recently screened at Ciné-Brunch, part of the Festival international du film ethnographique du Québec (FIFEQ). This production was the northern dimension of the event, whose theme was territory and Indigenous presence.

The INQ team is proud to see that the Northern Lexicon, an ambitious project aimed at collectively enriching our knowledge of Northern Quebec, is already bearing fruit. The short film Toundra is an eloquent example.

Call for Proposals

Research program on the economic impacts of climate change

The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQSC, FRQNT, FRQS) and the MELCCFP are inviting the scientific community to submit proposals for the Action concertée Programme de recherche sur les impacts économiques des changements climatiques.

The objectives of the program are to:

1) Better understand the costs and potential benefits associated with the impacts of climate change on selected vulnerable industry sectors and their infrastructure;

2) To better identify the costs and benefits of adapting to climate change in these same sectors;

3) Develop and consolidate Quebec's expertise in assessing the economic impacts of climate change and adaptation.

Visibility policy

Institut nordique du Québec has recently adopted an official visibility policy.

Holders of INQ-funded projects are responsible for applying this policy within their research teams.

The policy is available at all times on the INQ website in the "logos" section.
