Introduction to Inuktitut | Fall 2026
Offered in Fall 2026 by Institut nordique du Québec, under the aegis of its Training Committee, this practical Inuktitut course is designed to introduce participants to the language and culture of the Nunavik Inuit.
Taught by Aurélie Maire, anthropologist and ethnolinguist, the program offers an interactive approach tailored to the community's needs.
Linguistic Foundations
An introduction to the basics of the language and its structure.
Thematic Workshops
Focused on vocabulary adapted to participants' needs and fields of interest.
Interactive Approach
Including group conversation exercises.
Training Details
- Dates and duration: Every Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, from September 16 to December 9, 2026 (12 sessions, no class on Wednesday, October 28). Please allow about one hour per week to complete learning exercises prepared by the instructor.
- Location: Université Laval campus and online.
- Format: In-person attendance is strongly encouraged to foster dynamic interactions and group practical exercises. However, remote participation remains possible. Please note that participants joining online must keep their cameras on and actively participate in the proposed exercises.
- Target audience: Anyone wishing to acquire a practical introduction to Inuktitut, including researchers, Northern professionals, or enthusiasts of Indigenous languages and cultures. (Please note that this course is non-credit).
- Language: The training will be conducted in French.

Biography
Aurélie Maire
Aurélie Maire holds doctoral degrees in anthropology from Université Laval and in ethnolinguistics from the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO). She is also a graduate of INALCO's Inuit language and culture program. Since 2008, she has spent several winters in Nunavut studying Inuit terminology, orality, and graphic arts practices. In 2018, she was appointed editor-in-chief of Inuit Studies, a journal published by Université Laval's Centre interuniversitaire d'études et de recherches autochtones. She contributes to various research projects that promote Inuktitut and circumpolar Inuit culture. Since 2025, Aurélie Maire has been teaching Inuktitut courses for the INQ community.
