Institut nordique du Québec and its partners are pleased to invite you to Northern Days 2023.

Under the theme "Imprints of a Green Economy in a Northern Context", this conference will be a unique opportunity to discuss, present the state of knowledge and explore different perspectives by bringing together key actors from northern communities, First Peoples, academia, governments, NGOs and the private sector.

My Northern Project | Call for applications

Many people have been waiting for the call for applications for the My Northern Project science popularization competition!

This competition is aimed at Quebec students conducting northern and Arctic research. The concept is simple, you have five minutes, on-the-dot, to present your research project in the most captivating and informative way possible.

In addition to being an excellent communication exercise, this contest could take you far! In fact, by participating, you could be selected to represent Quebec at the international finals held each year during the Arctic Circle Assembly in Iceland. That said, before the international final, you will have to take part in the provincial round, which will be held in front of an audience during INQ's Northern Days. So, do you dare to take up the challenge?

A Physicist Canoeing in the Ice

If you see Dany Dumont canoeing through the ice, it's not just for sport or adventure. It's also for science. Sea ice is the focus of his research.

Along the northern coasts, between the pack ice and the open water, there is a discontinuity where the ice dances with the sea. This is the ice margin, a heterogeneous zone made up of blocks of ice ranging from tiny frazil crystals to slabs of several tens of meters in diameter, all tossed about by the waves. This is the laboratory of Dany Dumont, professor at Institut des sciences de la mer at the Université du Québec à Rimouski.

Northern Lexicon | Narwhal

The narwhal is an impressive looking whale that lives in the cold waters of the Arctic. It can be recognized by its huge emblematic tooth that can reach up to three meters in length, which is useful to hunt prey or to defend itself against predators. Unfortunately, the species is currently in decline, notably because of maritime traffic and the loss of its habitat, transformed by climate change.

MOOC | Québec nordique : enjeux, espaces et cultures

This training is free of charge and open to all!

Through a hundred filmed interviews, this MOOC gives the floor to specialists and actors from the North. Thanks to a remarkable diversity of speakers, it allows its participants to better understand the cultures of northern populations, the place of this space in the collective imagination, the different visions of development of the northern territory and its socio-political evolution.

This training is under the direction of Thierry Rodon, professor in the Department of Political Science at Université Laval and holder of the INQ research chair on Northern Sustainable Development.
