Fostering Ethical Partnerships: INQ’s First Peoples Committee Updates its Guidelines

INQ’s First Peoples Committee announces the release of a fully updated and more inclusive version of the Guides for Research in Northern Environments. This reference tool adapts to the profound transformations currently redefining the research landscape in northern Quebec.

The research environment in northern contexts is evolving at a steady pace. Today, reflections on scientific ethics are becoming more refined, making core concepts such as reconciliation, cultural safety, decolonization, and self-determination essential. At the same time, an increasing number of Indigenous Nations and communities are deploying their own governance structures to oversee scientific projects conducted on their traditional territories. This major revision was undertaken to address this changing reality.

A practical tool for all disciplines
This revised guide is intended for the entire scientific community, from tomorrow's next generation to experienced researchers working in Quebec's northern territories. Regardless of the discipline, the publication offers concrete information and rigorous food for thought aimed at fostering the development of ethical collaborations rooted in mutual respect. Users will also find an updated directory of recent and essential references to guide their efforts.

The realization of this new edition was made possible by the strength of the foundations already established. The First Peoples Committee would also like to highlight the essential contribution of the work carried out by the authors of the initial 2017 version, whose texts served as the foundation for this major overhaul.
