Researcher's commitment¹

Researchers affiliated with Institut nordique du Québec (INQ) agree to:

1)    Be familiar with and apply, to the extent possible, the recommendations² of the “Research Guidelines,” a guide to good research practices in the North, for themselves, their collaborators, students, and staff conducting fieldwork in the North;

2)    Assist in the development and, to the extent possible, participate in activities organized by INQ, such as the annual scientific meeting, scientific programming, research infrastructure management, logistics for northern and Arctic missions, relations with northern communities, partnerships with the private sector, and promotion of northern research in Quebec and Canada;

3)    Provide an up-to-date Canadian Common CV (CCV or equivalent) and consent to the extraction of certain elements³ from the CCV to meet the obligations of the institution that signed INQ membership agreement;

4)    Indicate on their website their status as an INQ-affiliated researcher.

5)    Identify INQ on all research projects funded by INQ.

1 - AFFILIATED RESEARCHERS must meet this definition

A researcher from a higher education institution working in the fields of humanities, health, social sciences, or pure and applied sciences, whose main research and innovation efforts already clearly address northern issues and challenges, such as those related to northern Quebec (>49th parallel) or the Canadian Arctic and circumpolar regions.

2 - RECOMMENDATIONS from the Research Guidelines Guide, First Peoples Committee, Institut nordique du Québec

"It is important for researchers to work closely with local communities and ensure that the proposed research is relevant and has meaningful benefits for them. There are several ways to achieve this collaboration harmoniously:

  • Ensure skills transfer between researchers and Indigenous peoples;
  • Develop the employability of Indigenous peoples by prioritizing the hiring of local human resources and training these individuals;Serve as a role model for young people in the communities by sharing not only your knowledge, but also your journey as a researcher;
  • Implement beneficial and permanent tools for the communities;
  • Promote local purchases and services when researchers are in northern environments;
  • Minimize their ecological footprint by leaving no waste behind and no equipment that cannot be used by local residents.

All of these recommendations are directly in line with INQ's sustainable development values and respond to the demands and needs of Indigenous peoples."

3 - CCV ELEMENTS to be extracted

To facilitate the task of administrators at INQ member universities who are required to provide certain information—it has been agreed to collect the CVs of affiliated researchers—INQ staff will extract the relevant elements from the membership agreement, which include:

  1. the names of the researchers, students, postdoctoral fellows, and professional staff involved;
  2. the projects that contribute to INQ and the funding for these projects;
  3. the involvement and contribution of northern communities or organizations to projects related to INQ.

Please note that northern or Arctic-focused projects extracted from the CCVs will not be identified as INQ projects but will be included in a database of projects that contribute to cataloguing scientific expertise for the sustainable development of northern Quebec. Projects that are or will eventually be funded by INQ will be identified with an INQ seal. The idea of having a bank of research projects that contribute to acquiring knowledge for the North and the Arctic is one of INQ's development objectives.
